Tuition & Fee Descriptions

Northern students pay tuition/fees according to the number of semester hours for which they register. (This includes courses taken for audit). Charges such as textbooks, program and course fees, fines (parking, books, etc.), housing and meals are not included in tuition/fees.

Student Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory whenever you are enrolled for six or more academic credits. MSU-Northern offers comprehensive health insurance coverage to students at a reasonable rate. If a student has other coverage, a waiver must be signed and the premium will be reversed. Students without health insurance who wish to purchase it from the University must pay $2,613 for Fall 2026 and $2,613 for Spring 2027. Payment of these two premiums results in coverage for 12 full months (Coverage Period Begins 08/01/2026). Spring 2027 Semester-Only rate for new students is $3,049 (Coverage Period: 01/01/2027 – 07/31/2027). Health insurance can’t be waived after 90 days of the coverage start date of the policy.    More details: Student Health Insurance Plan.

Student Insurance/Medicaid

The Montana Medicaid/HELP program and the Montana University System are working in partnership to provide student Medicaid/HELP clients with excellent medical coverage at a reasonable cost to the taxpayers.

NOTE on Montana University System students and Montana Medicaid: 
Anyone who qualifies for Montana Medicaid is required to tell Medicaid if they have another offer of health insurance coverage through an employer, spouse, parents, including the MUS student plan. For anyone with an offer of coverage, Medicaid will ask you a series of questions about your health and health needs and will determine whether it is more cost-effective to buy you into your offer of coverage instead of Medicaid. This assessment of cost effectiveness is done through the Montana Health Insurance Premium Payment Program (HIPP) and is required by federal law. If the HIPP program buys you into your offer of coverage, you will be also covered by Medicaid as a secondary insurance and will have two insurance cards. Information about the HIPP Program are included in your paperwork when you are approved for Medicaid.

*IMPORTANT*
Adult Medicaid/HELP clients MUST comply with Third-Party Liability programs, including the HIPP program, as a condition of keeping their Medicaid/HELP medical coverage. If they drop, or refuse, health insurance coverage that the state has determined to be cost effective, their Medicaid/HELP medical coverage may be canceled.
