In response to ever-present cybersecurity threats, Montana State University has implemented Duo, an easy-to-use, two-factor authentication platform. Duo authentication is required to access MSU online resources such as MyInfo, Degreeworks, Chrome River, Docusign, Banner Forms, and other services that use MSU Single Sign On (SSO) authentication. Duo authentication will be required for Office 365 desktop and mobile applications starting August 22, 2022.
Employee email accounts are not automatically set up. You must first complete all your HR paperwork and fill out an account application form (included in your HR packet).
Email addresses are in the format first.last@msun.edu
Employee email accounts are in Office 365 and come with 99GB of storage. Outlook is the supported email client on campus. There is also a web client for Outlook Web Access (OWA) that can be accessed anywhere you have an internet connection. Smart phones can be configured for access using the Microsoft Outlook app. Enter your NetID@msun.edu (*not* your email address) and your NetID password when using OWA and/or the Outlook app on your phone.
Spam
University email addresses are publicly available and attract a log of spam. Users are strongly encouraged to Think Before You Click - Ignore unsolicited emails, and be wary of attachments, links and forms in emails even if they appear to come from someone you know. If it's unexpected or suspicious for any reason, don't click on it. You can send a screenshot of the email to the Help Desk and ask for confirmation whether or not the email is legitimate.
Safe Computing
Hackers target individual computers in order to use them as entry points to the university network. A compromised network puts the personal identification information of all students, faculty and staff at risk. Keeping your computer safe is the first line of defense to protect everyone.
Apply all system updates as soon as possible! If your computer is telling you it needs to restart to complete updates, restart it. Don't get impatient and turn it off hoping it will restart faster.
Be a good data steward
