Personal Advising:

Professionally trained advisors can help with personal problems or unexpected situations which can affect academic success and personal well-being.

  • Assistance with course or term withdrawal, as needed

The Student Support Services advisors also assist students in exploring interests, aptitudes, and skills, so they can make informed choices when selecting majors or career paths.

Graduate and Professional Advising:

The TRIO staff strongly encourages and supports students continuing their education at the graduate level. The SSS advisors provide assistance in choosing the proper program, researching financial aid options, and helping with the entire application process. In addition, to offering advising for undergraduate students interested in attending graduate school; our staff also assists our participants in determining career paths after graduation.  The SSS Advisors work closely with MSUN's Career Center to ensure students are provided with all of the necessary resources throughout the entire career exploration process and are fully prepared to enter the workforce after graduation.

Individualized Tutoring:

Professional and peer tutors can provide FREE individualized assistance in a wide variety of disciplines. Tutors can assist in understanding concepts, recommending study techniques, checking comprehension, and providing encouragement.

Study Lab, Textbook Library + Much More!

Program participants have the privilege of utilizing a computer and study lab reserved for their use. SSS also has each semester's required texts on hand and available for checkout, as well as laptops for participants to use while in our center. Both resources must remain in SSS, but students can also take advantage of on-staff tutors, free printing and school supplies!

What is TRIO Student Support Services?

Through a grant competition, funds are awarded to institutions of higher education to provide opportunities for academic development, to assist students with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward the successful completion of their post secondary education. The goal of TRIO SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants, and to inform the academic community of best practices and strategies for retaining and graduating all students. SSS is there to assist its students at every stage of undergraduate education providing intensive academic, personal, and career advising.

Eligible Students

The SSS program is available to undergraduate MSUN students who meet the following criteria:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • Be an admitted MSUN undergraduate student
  • Demonstrate academic need

In addition, SSS participants must meet at least one of the three requirements:

  • Have a low income as defined by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Be from a family from which neither parent/guardian has earned a bachelor's degree
  • Be registered with MSUN Office of Disability Services

MSUN TRIO SSS program can serve over 200 students each year. 62% of MSUN students qualify for this program so it is important to get your application in as soon as possible to ensure your spot. Applicants will be selected if they meet the above criteria and demonstrate a commitment to active participation.
