Working remotely works best when employees and supervisors communicate clearly about expectations.
- If possible, it is recommended that you use an MSUN-owned and managed device for all MSUN work. If this is not an option, you should use the VPN and remote desktop to your office computer. Never store university related documents on your personal computer.
- Evaluate the speed of your home internet connection. If your connection is too slow to work effectively, review the troubleshooting section of the Internet Speed Guide to see if any of the suggestions speed up the connection.
- If you are not using a laptop, you will probably need a webcam and a headset with a microphone.
- Plan communication with your team members and test how to conduct remote meetings.
- It is recommended to have at least 12Mpbs down and 3Mps up for your home ISP speed. This is the bare minimum and you may require faster speeds depending on the needs of your household. If there are other people doing things such as work, streaming videos, or playing video games you will require faster speeds. As a general rule, add an additional 12Mbps down for each device that is in use at any given time.
- Test making and receiving voice and video calls from home.
- Is the area you are in quiet enough for calls?
- Will you require a headset?
- Does your webcam work as expected for video calls/meetings?
- Review these online meeting etiquette tips to make sure your meetings are productive.
- Make sure you have access to the files you need. Put your own personal work files on your Z: drive, OneDrive or Box. If you will need access to files on a departmental shares, make sure you can access the shared drive(s) you need. Review the types of data, where it can be stored, and don't store MSUN data on your personal computer or in personal storage locations such as Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.
- If you need to access services that require Virtual Private Network (VPN), like your Z drive or departmental drives, or your desktop computer, get the VPN and Remote Desktop set up. Make sure to test your VPN access from home.
- Be prepared! Test access to your equipment and resources at home before the need arises, and contact the ITS Help Desk if you have questions or issues. If you do not have equipment at home that meets these standards, please consult with your supervisor.
Working at home can present challenges on a daily basis. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefits are available to all MSUN employees and their families at no cost to you. EAP offers confidential advice, support, and practical solutions to real-life issues.
