The Montana State University-Northern Safety and Disaster Committee is required under the Montana Safety Culture Act (§39-71-1504, MCA). In compliance, this policy is being implemented on behalf of Montana State University-Northern campus community.
The MSUN Safety and Disaster Committee provides methods by which campus establishes safe working conditions and safety and disaster response procedures. Furthermore, the committee’s procedures aim to reduce costs associated with accidental losses, and establish guidelines necessary to respond to most campus emergencies.
The objectives of this committee are as follows:
- Response procedures that ensure safety is an integral part of day-to-day operations and work procedures.
- Ensure all campus members are taking an active interest by participating and abiding by applicable federal, state, local and agency safety rules and regulations.
- Develop, maintain and implement MSUN's Emergency Response Manual.
- Coordinate involvement with local officials, agencies and emergency services.
The Committee will:
- Meet at least monthly;
- Review and respond to safety concerns and accident investigations;
- Develop and publish all safety and disaster related information, policies and procedures;
- Organize and conduct campus safety training and drills; and
- Maintain MSUN's Emergency Notification Policy.
The Safety and Disaster Committee chair(s) role is to coordinate with the committee to develop policies and procedures and advise the Chancellor in the development of safety culture at Montana State University-Northern. The Safety and Disaster Committee consists of the following representatives:
- Chair: Designated by the Chancellor
- Vice Chancellor of Student Success
- Human Resources Representative
- Facilities Services Representative
- Student Wellness Center Representative
- Mental Health Representative
- Chief Information Officer
- Director of Communications and Marketing
- AFSCME Union Representative or designee
- CASE Faculty Representative
- COTS Faculty Representative
- COHS Faculty Representative
- Appointed ASMSUN Student Member
- Two at-large members appointed by the Chancellor
Select Safety and Disaster Committee members are also members of the Emergency Response Team. Each Emergency Response Team member will:
- Participate in campus appropriate safety trainings;
- Participate in applicable campus table top and live drills; and
- Promote awareness of safety and training to reduce the costs associated with accident losses.
