Introduction

Montana State University-Northern cares about the health and safety of the campus community. The CARE Team was developed to centralize the reporting, assessment, and management of concerns regarding student behavior. This team includes qualified and dedicated professionals from various disciplines that are committed to promoting a productive and safe environment for all students, faculty and staff focused on student learning and development. The Team serves 5 primary functions:

  1. Gather information to assess situations involving students who display concerning or disruptive behaviors.
  2. Recommend appropriate intervention strategies.
  3. Connect students with needed campus and community resources.
  4. Provide consultation and support to all employees in assisting students who display concerning or disruptive behaviors.
  5. Monitor and review ongoing behavior of students who have displayed disruptive or concerning behavior.

The CARE Team acts in a proactive manner to identify, assess, manage, and educate the campus community as to the risk of potentially concerning or disruptive behavior. It shall maintain confidentiality and handle all matters discreetly. The CARE Team is not an emergency response team. If behaviors require emergent attention, call 911.

Statement

The CARE Team shall be established each fiscal year by the Chancellor and will be charged with identifying and assessing potentially concerning or disruptive student behavior. The Team will be responsible for educating the campus and community on its mission and procedures.

The CARE Team will include the Dean of Students, Executive Director of Enrollment Management, Director of Student Health, an on-campus mental health provider, and the Student Health Services Counselor. This team will seek additional consultation from other campus departments and professionals. The Dean of Students will act as the chair of the CARE Team. The Team will meet every week during the academic year or more often, if needed to address concerns regarding students. In coordinating with students, faculty, staff, and community members, the Team will utilize thoughtful objective approaches to identify, assess, and intervene with individuals of concern.
